What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a group of signs and symptoms caused by pressure on the median nerve at the wrist. This nerve travels through a narrow space formed by the wrist bones on the bottom and a strong ligament across the top.
When pressure builds inside this tunnel, it can reduce normal blood flow and movement of nutrients within the nerve. This may cause the nerve to swell, which can sometimes be seen with ultrasound. If the pressure continues, nerve conduction studies may begin to show slowed or damaged nerve signals. In more severe cases, needle EMG may also show changes in the hand muscles supplied by the median nerve. Symptoms may include numbness, tingling, pain, weakness, night symptoms, dropping objects, or symptoms that affect the thumb, index, middle, or ring fingers.

How EMG/NCS Helps Evaluate Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
