How long does the appointment take?
Most appointments take approximately 45 to 60 minutes. The length of the visit may vary depending on the area being tested and the complexity of the study.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Please avoid applying lotion, oils, or creams to the area being tested on the day of your appointment. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the arms, legs, neck, or back being evaluated. You may usually eat, drink, and take your regular medications unless your medical provider gives you different instructions.
Is EMG testing painful?
Some parts of the test may be uncomfortable, but most patients tolerate the examination well. The nerve conduction portion uses brief electrical pulses, while the EMG portion uses a small needle to examine selected muscles. The testing is adjusted based on the clinical question and the information needed.
How quickly are reports available?
Reports are typically completed the same day and sent to the referring provider. This helps reduce delays in follow-up care and treatment planning.
